Teralta Art Youth & Community Art Programs is part of Teralta Art, founded by Maggie Shen during the pandemic in June 2021. Since June 2021, over 2520 individuals have received low-cost or free ceramics classes. The leadership team includes Founder, Co-Founder and Executive Director Maggie Shen; Instructor and Outreach Coordinator Aidan Ryan; Instructor and Web/Email Specialist Anna Colman; and Instructor and Studio Assistant Reiley O’Brian. Teralta Art states that art transcends museum walls and has been part of daily life since ancient times, and its mission focuses on equitable art access and outreach that aims to empower immigrant, refugee, and economically disadvantaged communities to engage in shaping regional culture through art-making. In 2024, it provided 24 scholarships totaling $3315 and 229 free community engagement hours. The organization is working to make therapeutic art-making accessible to the San Diego community and notes that 100% of sales from shop items go toward supporting its nonprofit mission. Its community involvement includes ongoing partnerships with the National Conflict Resolution Center on the Juvenile Diversion Initiative and THRIVE program, Urban Street Angels to offer free art-making and Open Clay to homeless youth ages 18–25, and the International Rescue Committee to provide therapeutic art-making to families affected by war, as well as work with NEURO-UNIVERSE, Roosevelt Middle School, and La Jolla Elementary School. Teralta Art also runs the Children’s Rights Project, a multi-organizational art research project to help raise funds and awareness of children’s rights in times of war.
