I Love A Clean San Diego Environmental Education & Volunteer Programs includes litter cleanups, hands-on environmental activities, and environmental education presentations in schools countywide. The program’s activities also include a Compost & Mulch Giveaway Event and a cleanup of the San Diego River.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: ILACSD office hours are Monday–Friday, 9:00 am–4:00 pm, and the Recycling Call Center has live representative hours from 8:00 am–1:00 pm Monday–Friday (except on holidays)
Founded as the San Diego War Against Litter Committee (WALC) in 1954, the organization adopted “I Love A Clean San Diego” as the slogan for its anti-litter campaign in the 1970s and made it the organization’s name in 1980. In 1989, I Love A Clean San Diego merged with the San Diego Ecology Center. The organization’s mission is to lead and inspire the community to actively conserve and enhance the environment through example, outreach, and local involvement, and its vision is a zero waste, litter-free, and environmentally engaged San Diego region.
I Love A Clean San Diego partners with the County of San Diego, Green Oceanside, and the San Diego River Park Foundation for litter cleanups, including a cleanup of the San Diego River. ILACSD serves about 100,000 students, adults, and businesses every year through environmental education, volunteer cleanup and beautification programs, and recycling and zero waste solutions. Each year, environmental educators foster awareness among 30,000 San Diegans, and ILACSD hosts over 900 workshops and produces 600 community cleanups. Community cleanups clear nearly half a million pounds of pollution and debris from beaches, canyons, neighborhoods, creeks, and coastlines annually.
WasteFreeSD.org is a zero waste database and call center that provides residents with information to reduce, reuse, repair, recycle, and donate items that might otherwise go to landfills, and ILACSD maintains information on over 1,700 centers to help residents and businesses find disposal solutions. Creek to Bay Cleanup is one of the largest single-day environmental action events in San Diego County, and I Love A Clean San Diego has served as the official organizer of Coastal Cleanup Day in San Diego County since it was founded in 1985. The Adopt-A-Beach and -Canyon program allows volunteers of all ages and group sizes to adopt a coastal or inland site by conducting three cleanups over one year, and volunteers collect and report detailed litter data from their cleanups to be recognized in a sign program at participating locations. The Sustainable Solutions Fair (formerly the Zero Waste Fair) is a family-friendly sustainability celebration with hands-on environmental activities for all ages and a panel discussion featuring local environmental leaders. Many ILACSD volunteers pledge to bring reusable work gloves, water bottles, or buckets to cleanups to make cleanups more sustainable.
