Greene Music Education Center offers the Junior Music Course, where lesson contents include hearing (ear training), singing, keyboard playing, and creating (composition). The program also offers piano, guitar, bass, violin, viola, and cello lessons in both group lessons and private lessons. This two-year program helps children develop their musical abilities and create expression naturally.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes run year-round and meet once per week for 50 minutes, excluding holidays on the Greene Music Education Center calendar (46 classes per year).
• Price: Individual $121 per month. Family $117 per month (per student). Family discounts apply when 2 or more siblings are currently enrolled and only apply when the class meets the five-student minimum per class.
Classes have start date options of January 8th, 2026 on Thursdays at 4:00 p.m., January 9th, 2026 on Fridays at 4:30 p.m., and January 10th, 2026 on Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. General hours are Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with additional times available by appointment and Sunday by appointment only. A free preview class is available, and the Yamaha Music Education program accepts students as young as 4 years old.
Greene Music Education Center is San Diego’s Yamaha Music School and is one of San Diego County’s largest private music schools with an enrollment of over 400 students. The Greene Music Education Center’s goal is to improve the quality of life for people of all ages by introducing them to the joy of making music. The program welcomes children and adults at any skill level for both group and private lessons. The Junior Music Course is a two-year program that is part of a system that has over 50 years of research and development and is the result of music education research in the US, Japan, Canada, and dozens of other countries, with over 6,000,000 students having studied at Yamaha Music Schools and over 4 million graduates.
Teachers at Greene Music Education Center are Yamaha-certified teachers who have passed demanding tests in musicianship and completed rigorous training prior to certification by the Yamaha Music Education System. These Yamaha-certified teachers are college-trained musicians and educators. The Yamaha Music Education System’s approach, textbooks, and materials are widely regarded by educators as the best available. Jay Jay Lim, the piano teacher and school manager, received his B.S. from the University of Arizona, his B.M. in Music Therapy from Berklee College of Music, and his M.M. in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University, has been with Greene Music since 1999, and received the “Award of Excellence” as a Yamaha Music Education Teacher in 2017. Other instructors include Elise Cho, a certified Yamaha instructor since 1998 with B.M. and M.M. degrees focused on keyboard instruments; Tanya Djangirov, who holds a B.A. and M.M. in Musicology and has over 20 years of teaching experience; Mihoko Nemoto, a Yamaha Music System Instructor for over 16 years with 26 years of teaching experience in Japan and the United States; Yiting Wang, who has taught private and group piano at Greene Music Education Center since 2004 and holds both a Master of Music and a Bachelor of Music in piano from San Diego State University; and Lilia Ulman, who holds advanced degrees in piano pedagogy and has taught classical piano since before moving to San Diego in 1993. Lilia Ulman received a Forte Award for a Fine Outstanding Resourceful Teacher of Excellence.

Community involvement includes music therapy groups led by Jay Jay Lim at various residential and assisted living centers throughout San Diego County, as well as performances at venues such as Turf Supper Club and Cafe La Maze. Yiting Wang’s collaborative piano work includes accompanying students at SDSU, Community Music School, San Diego Youth Symphony, and various local institutions.
