The non-profit San Diego Sharks Foundation produces free kids basketball clinics around San Diego County and gives away thousands of free Sharks tickets each season. The Sharks were established in 2022 and have reached the playoffs in each of their first four seasons. The Sharks are a founding team in the relaunch of the USBL, which is described as the nation's premier league for emerging basketball talent, and their fifth season overall begins in early March with free tickets and free popcorn for fans of all ages.
Head Coach and General Manager Brandon Cheeks is a Queens, New York native and a San Diego City College alumnus, and he was a collegiate athlete at Cal State Long Beach. He has been a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and small business owner for over ten years. His coaching career started in 2012 at The Rock Academy in San Diego, and he later coached at Mater Dei High School in San Diego. As head coach of the San Diego Guardians ABA Basketball organization, he led the team to being voted the ABA’s most improved team. After three years of coaching in the ABA, he led a TBL team to a 6-0 start, earning coach of the month honors for his first month in the TBL, and that team went on to win the Western Conference Championship, where a member of the team was selected MVP. Coach Brandon Cheeks is also a husband and a father of four young men.
Assistant Coach Jeremiah Ryden is a San Diego native with a NCAA Gold Certification. He has eight years of AAU experience as a head coach leading teams at KAO and Sixthman in the competitive AAU Gold Division and has taken a role at Sixthman as the Director of player development. He has held positions as Head Coach at Swish Pro-Am and Assistant Coach at the Drew League, and he has held leadership roles at EBC Basketball and Tierrasanta Basketball camps.
The San Diego Sharks Foundation has announced a community partnership with Alaska Airlines and the Challenged Athletes Foundation. The Sharks describe themselves as San Diego’s home for pro basketball fun for all ages and bring a fans-first approach, including offering chances to get first dibs on their next free kids basketball clinic.
