About

Science Programs at the Maritime Museum of San Diego introduce students to on-the-water adventures such as day sails and longboat rowing, including rowing on San Diego Bay. Participants work with the sailing technology of the historic ship Star of India, explore the museum’s diverse collection of ships through dockside and sailing programs, and can take part in a three-hour day sail on San Diego Bay where they hoist sails, take the helm, and learn to tie knots used aboard ship. The programs also include a 1.5-hour interactive tour of historic ships, an optional San Diego Bay cruise, and activities that teach about the STEM of sailing technology and the maritime environment.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Open daily, 10 AM–5 PM (entry gate closes at 4 PM)

The Maritime Museum of San Diego was founded in 1948 and includes a world-class collection of historic ships and exhibits, including the world’s oldest active sailing ship, Star of India. The museum’s Science Programs are part of a broader set of offerings for K–12 school groups, scouts, families, and adults, and the organization serves over 15,000 students each year through educational programs. The museum’s educational programs are described as award-winning, and the museum has been named one of the top three maritime museums globally and is widely considered one of the top things to do in San Diego. The mission of the Maritime Museum of San Diego is to serve as the community memory of the seafaring experience by collecting, preserving, and presenting maritime heritage and historic connections with the Pacific world. The leadership team includes Christina Connett Brophy, Ph.D. (President/CEO), Gener Austria (Chief Operating Officer/Board Secretary), and Cory Clark (Chief Financial Officer). One teacher testimonial from a fifth-grade teacher at Julian Elementary School describes the Living History Program staff as wonderful and notes that students learn history and build confidence during their visit.
