The program offers immersive circus camps where kids become part of an artistic ensemble while learning the fundamentals of circus arts. Circus activities in this program are described as building a foundation for strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, focus, posture, teamwork, and determination. The program is described as nurturing each student's confidence and fostering self-discipline in a supportive and safe environment that encourages students to try new things and believe in their abilities. Students participate in activities on the ground and in the air and are described as becoming more comfortable expressing who they are. The program materials state that young people who try circus learn creativity, problem solving, resilience, empathy, and collaboration.
Summer Camps at San Diego Circus Center are led by program director Jean-Luc Martin, CEO and Founder of San Diego Circus Center. Jean-Luc began formally teaching circus arts in San Diego in 2008 and founded San Diego Circus Center in 2011. The staff is described as providing world-class training from internationally recognized instructors, with industry-leading safety protocols and certified instructors.
San Diego Circus Center states that it is devoted to advancing circus training in North America and enriching the lives of its community by teaching circus disciplines, art, and culture. Its mission emphasizes contemporary and traditional circus disciplines, higher education and professional programs, and an inclusive, noncompetitive environment that focuses on individual strengths. The organization also highlights the joy of recreational studies and describes a vibrant community where circus arts inspire and unite participants. It offers contemporary and traditional circus training and performance opportunities for youth and adults in a safe, noncompetitive, socially enriching, and nurturing environment.
An annual SDCC Festival is described as an annual celebration showcasing circus arts with workshops, performances, and community events. A testimonial from Beto Freitas of Cirque du Soleil/The 7 Fingers describes the center as “so well organized, and so clean” and says, “This place has everything we need!”
