The City of San Dimas Parks and Recreation Department states that its mission is to provide citizens, community organizations, and interest groups a broad spectrum of activities during their leisure hours, based on their needs and desires, to enrich the quality of life in the community. The department also states that it is dedicated to providing these activities to citizens, community organizations, and interest groups during their leisure hours.
Instructors in City of San Dimas Recreation Classes are independent contractors for the City of San Dimas. They are contracted quarterly on a 68/32 basis, with instructors receiving 68% of registration fees collected and the City receiving 32%, and they are paid at the conclusion of the session, with checks generally distributed within two weeks of the class end date. Class instructors who teach children under the age of 18 must be fingerprinted through the San Dimas Sheriff’s Department, and some instructors are required to carry liability insurance for the class they instruct through the program, with a current insurance certificate and additional insured endorsement required when submitting the Contractor Agreement for Recreation Class Instructor.
The process for offering a class begins with an independent contract instructor proposing a course or activity by completing the Contract Instructor Proposal Handbook. The Recreation Coordinator reviews the proposal, assesses the content to determine its potential in meeting the department’s vision and goals, and then contacts the proposer for a more detailed discussion. The Recreation Coordinator works with the proposer to determine the specific design of a course or activity, including facility suitability and availability, fee structure, course time frames, participant minimums and maximums, age ranges, and course descriptions, and once the proposal is accepted and approved, a formal written contract is produced that outlines the agreement. Instructors are responsible for providing all equipment and supplies needed to conduct their proposed class in a professional manner.
For inclusion in the Frontier Recreation Guide, class worksheets are due the first Friday of September for the Winter Session, the first Friday of November for the Spring Session, the first Friday of February for the Summer Session, and the first Friday of May for the Fall Session. The department notes that programs and activities may be designed for preschoolers, school-age children, teens, adults, older adults, or families.
