18 Reasons is a nonprofit on a mission to empower the community with the confidence and creativity needed to buy, cook, and eat good food every day. The organization began in 2008 with tasting classes and community dinners created by Bi-Rite Market; in 2011 the nonprofit Three Squares was founded, and in 2013 the organizations merged and became the current 18 Reasons. Its free community programs include Food as Medicine, Nourishing Pregnancy, and Cooking Matters, which bring culturally relevant cooking and nutrition education to adults, teens, and children annually in the Bay Area. 18 Reasons maintains strong ties with Bi-Rite Market and continues to grow its impact across San Francisco, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties. The organization is guided by core values described as Food, Heart, Learning, Liberation, and Moxie.
