About
After-School Tutoring and Workshops offers after-school tutoring, homework help, individualized tutoring, and after-school workshops focused on writing and publishing programs. Students take part in creative writing prompts, writing cohorts, storytelling and bookmaking field trips, podcasting field trips, magical field trip adventures, and immersive adventures that invite classes to complete a writing project. The program also includes in-school support and in-classroom tutoring assistance with writing projects, as well as field trips and camps, special projects and events in the evenings and on weekends, leadership development, leadership opportunities, scholarships, and application support.

826 Valencia, which runs After-School Tutoring and Workshops, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. 826 Valencia provides free writing and publishing programs in San Francisco, including writing and publishing programs for youth from underserved communities, and provides free writing programs to thousands of students every year. 826 Valencia amplifies student voices by publishing and sharing their work for all to read and hear, and student authors share creative and compelling stories in formats such as books and podcasts. The organization has been active from 2002 to 2026.
The Mission Center supports schools including Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8, Everett Middle School, and Mission High School. The Tenderloin Center supports schools including De Marillac Academy and Tenderloin Community School. The Mission Bay Center supports schools including Starr King Elementary, Bret Harte Elementary, Malcolm X Academy, Downtown High School, and San Francisco International High School.
The leadership and staff team includes Maya Makker for communications and press, Amanda Boese for publications and design, Melissa Anguiano for general program inquiries at the Mission Center, Kendra Lappin for workshops in the evenings and on weekends, Phuong Duong for general program inquiries at the Tenderloin Center, and Misha Villatuya for general program inquiries at Mission Bay.
A student described their experience by saying, “I write about the world I wish to see, where I am powerful and where my writing can give voice to people who are like me.”
