Blue Bear School of Music is described as San Francisco’s home for music lessons and classes and is known as the Original School of Rock & Roll since 1971. It has been part of the Blue Bear culture for over 50 years and has historically served 50,000 students, with more than 2,000 students per year and 60+ teaching musicians currently employed. The teachers have many years of experience in the music industry and provide instruction across a wide variety of instruments and skill levels. Blue Bear also offers sliding scale tuition and scholarships to assist students from families with financial need.

The nonprofit mission of Blue Bear School of Music is summed up as “Making Music Changes Lives,” with a commitment to social equity through teaching popular music such as rock, blues, urban, and world, and making it accessible to a greater number of youth in the community. The organization partners with schools, shelters, and community centers in San Francisco to bring music to underserved populations for free and has served over 500 children and young adults through its Outreach Programs in the last year.

Testimonials from parents and students describe the staff as professional, patient, and passionate about music and mentoring kids, and note that participation has been helpful for kids’ growth as musicians and as people. A teen all-star band performance for Blue Bear’s 50th anniversary is mentioned by Jack Black, who calls Blue Bear “the original school of rock” and notes that they have been teaching kids to rock since 1971. Additional details shared by the program include that there have been 47 known Blue Bear marriages and that Tracy Chapman took four piano lessons there.
