About
Charles Gracie Academy Richmond District offers kids Jiu-Jitsu classes that include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the gi, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu without the gi, and wrestling. Gi classes focus on traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training while wearing the kimono, and no-gi classes focus on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques without the traditional uniform. The academy also offers a wrestling class that is free to all current and active wrestlers and is used to supplement students’ training and support local San Francisco wrestling.
• Ages: 5–14 years old
The program offers a 3 class free trial. The 5–7 year old program introduces the basics of Jiu-Jitsu in a fun and safe environment and includes core values like self-confidence, respect, and discipline. The 7–9 year old program increases understanding of Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals and character development with more in-depth focus on techniques and sparring. The 10–14 year old class builds a solid foundation of Jiu-Jitsu techniques and concepts, includes fundamentals and some advanced techniques, and prepares students for adult style training. No-gi classes use athletic wear such as rash guards and shorts. All of the coaches have years of experience in folk style wrestling. The academy uses a blend of ecological, traditional, and chain drilling based training methods. Its stated mission is to teach modern Jiu-Jitsu with traditional values, with goals that include helping students understand Jiu-Jitsu quickly and efficiently, getting them fit and durable, and building confidence in their ability to protect themselves and use Jiu-Jitsu for contexts such as competition, losing weight, or learning something new for fun. The academy states that martial arts is a tool to improve oneself and that it is committed to helping students reach their goals.
