Japanese Language Programs is part of the Japan Society of Northern California, which was founded in 1905. The organization was founded to spread knowledge of Japanese language, arts, industry, history, folklore, and customs, and to promote U.S.-Japan cooperation. Language instructors are described as seasoned teachers of Japanese who have taught both in the U.S. and Japan. For more than 100 years, the Japan Society of Northern California has fostered collaboration and understanding between the United States and Japan by providing Northern Californians with language, cultural, and business programming and opportunities for fellowship.

The Japan Society of Northern California notes leadership that includes Suzanne Basalla as New Board Chair and Larry Greenwood as former Board Chair. The organization highlights events such as an “Award of Honor” Gala and Innovation Awards. It offers various affordable Japanese language programs aiming to connect the U.S. and Japan, Japanese language classes at various levels throughout the Bay Area, and programs and networking opportunities for people and organizations in the Bay Area with a strong interest in Japan. It also offers speaker events, symposia and conferences, social events, school education programs and language lessons, as well as opportunities to meet and collaborate with industry, academic, and government leaders shaping the Japan–U.S. relationship. One testimonial describes a participant who takes part in both virtual group lessons and in-person private lessons, with private lessons tailored to their level and needs and held twice weekly in-home, and mentions working on Japanese verb conjugations such as the causative passive case.
