About

RHYTHM (Reaching Youth Through Music) is a workshop series that brings members of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus into schools to lead interactive dialogue, storytelling, dancing, and songs. The program includes activities such as a 45-minute workshop with the school's Gender and Sexuality Alliance club, discussion of the school's climate and inclusivity, and creation of action steps and solutions to bring more acceptance and encourage students to be their most authentic selves. Students may also experience a choral master class, preparation for performance with the chorus, and a 45–75 minute performance that combines song, story, informational dialogue, and a facilitated Q&A, with some students joining SFGMC on stage to sing one of the songs in the assembly.

• Ages: 11–18 years old
• Schedule: Workshop series of four education enhancement and leadership development components spanning two weeks; pinnacle performance lasts 45–75 minutes

RHYTHM is described as a fully immersive workshop series that brings SFGMC into Bay Area schools through discussions about community, sharing personal stories, education, and music, with themes that include pride, individualism, anti-bullying, and advocacy. The program includes a 45-minute GSA workshop, a choral master class with SFGMC's Associate Director of Music Education and Outreach Mitch Galli, a 45–75 minute performance by 30–40 SFGMC singers, and a Meet and Greet Luncheon with GSA students and SFGMC singers. Through the Outside Voices curriculum, students turn their personal stories into performance art pieces, and chorus members share personal stories about their childhoods.

Since its launch in 2018, RHYTHM has served close to 15,000 students across the Bay Area and beyond and reached more than 4,000 students in its first season. RHYTHM partners with Young Audiences of Northern California and serves students across the Bay Area and beyond, including schools from El Cerrito to East Palo Alto to Petaluma, with visits during Season 40 to four high schools and one elementary school. The mission of RHYTHM is stated as “LGBTQ+ Youth Music Education & Outreach BUILDING EMPATHY IN SCHOOLS AND EMPOWERING LGBTQIA+ YOUTH ACROSS THE BAY AREA,” and it reaffirms and supports students in expressing their authentic selves regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and promotes the power of being an ally.

One student from the choir at Harker Middle School said their favorite part was when the chorus sang with the school choir because it showed that by standing together, people can overcome anything. Another student, Gilbert, said, “I learned that if you express yourself, you will discover friends you never knew you had.” A review described RHYTHM as bringing a balance of interactive dialogue, storytelling, dancing, and songs, with students highly engaged and noting the impact of hearing personal stories from chorus members about their childhoods. An elementary school teacher described RHYTHM as one of the most moving and rewarding moments in over twenty years of teaching and called it unforgettable.
