SF Seals was founded in 1981 as a local recreational team that reached competitive heights. The organization states that it has been coaching youth players to achieve their highest potential for over 30 years, with coaches working to support the individual needs of each player as well as the team as a whole. Its stated mission is to provide a youth soccer program that emphasizes age-appropriate skills development and a deeper understanding of game strategy, to prepare players for the next level of play, and to create an environment where players enjoy soccer while developing life skills.

The leadership team includes Director of Coaching Shani Simpson; Financial Aid & MLS NEXT Admin Director Anna Livesey; Assistant Director of Coaching Blagovest Tranchev; Seals NorCal Operations Travel|Competitive|Tryouts lead Shane Watkins; and Seals Program Director for Recreation and Micro Soccer, Zak Chirazi. SF Seals provides an ongoing professional development plan for its coaches.

According to the program, 15 former SF Seals youth players have gone on to play for the National Team, and 43 players who have worn the Seals shirt have gone on to play professionally for teams around the world. In 1987, an SF Seals team featuring Director of Coaching Shani Simpson was named “The USA’s Team of the Year” by USA Today, and that amateur team went on to beat MLS’s San Jose Clash on its way to the US Open Cup semi-finals. When COVID hit in 2020, SF Seals transitioned to Zoom-based workouts, created a club-wide training log for players and coaches to track individual workouts, and awarded weekly prizes to players who showed exceptional commitment, and this COVID-era training approach was featured on NBC Bay Area.

The organization’s stated core values are Player Development, Love of the Game, Respect, Effort, and Positivity. SF Seals also reports a partnership with Soccer Without Borders, a non-profit organization that uses soccer as a vehicle for positive change for underserved, newcomer, refugee, and immigrant youth.
