About

Pacific Primary offers play-based days that include hands-on experiences, music, movement, expressive arts, and field trips. Both of its schools offer a learning environment filled with play and hands-on experiences, and use San Francisco’s extraordinary local environment as a resource for field trips. From October through June, classes explore the city through weekly field trips, and in the summer program, children join two months of field trips throughout the Bay Area on a chartered school bus with child safety seats.

• Ages: 2–6 years old
• Schedule: Operates year-round from 7:45 AM to 5:30 PM, with weekly field trips from October through June and a summer program with two months of field trips

Pacific Primary was founded in 1974 by a group of parents and Mary Nordland Bodo, and a Board of Directors was elected. The Yellow Sun School opened in September 1974, and the Orange Sun School opened in September 2008; Pacific Primary is 50 years old. The staff consists of talented, experienced, and dedicated professionals, including dedicated specialists in music, movement, and the expressive arts. The program states that its number one priority is creating a childhood for each child that is filled with discovery, play, love of learning, and connections with others.

Parents actively support the school by fundraising, maintaining the school’s physical plant, and joining classroom and field trip activities. The school relies heavily on parent involvement, including an orientation meeting, one maintenance day, participation in fundraising events such as the Annual Fund, Book Fair, and Auction, assistance with organizing a fundraising event, and joining a parent committee. The school celebrates diversity across ethnic, racial, and economic backgrounds and all types of families, including adoptive, LGBTQ, and one or more parent families, and serves families from the Bay Area. Field trips usually use public transportation with the assistance of parent volunteers, and summer program excursions throughout the Bay Area are taken on a chartered school bus with child safety seats. The program offers a full-day schedule to support working parents and serves family-style meals that include a simple breakfast, hot lunch, and morning and afternoon snacks prepared by the school’s chef, with organic fruits, vegetables, and grains.
