British Swim School was founded by Rita Goldberg. The program began in Manchester, England in 1981, expanded to North America in 1991, and its instructional program has been in use for over 40 years. Instructors are described as expert, highly-trained, and enthusiastic about teaching water safety. The program uses gentle teaching methods and a survival-first approach to teach water survival skills and inspire confidence in swimmers of all ages and experience levels. It offers programs for children starting at 3 months old through adults, with small group sizes of 4–6 swimmers and year-round enrollment. The program follows a progressive, goal-oriented structure where swimmers progress at their own pace, with a focus on water safety, survival skills, and stroke development. It includes a specialized Dolphin program for adaptive aquatics, as well as lessons designed specifically for teens and for adults that focus on water safety and stroke development. British Swim School has a Peppa Pig partnership.
Parents describe the instruction as excellent and note that their children build water confidence in a safe, supportive environment, with small class sizes and patient instructors who are engaging, gentle, and focused on safety. Families report that children learn real water safety skills, gain confidence in the water, and enjoy the weekly lessons, and some families share that both children and adults in their household have learned to swim and become comfortable in the water through the program. Multiple parents highlight the small group sizes, the welcoming feel of each lesson, and the focus on building skills, and several say they highly recommend the program for families seeking peace of mind.
