Saturday Conservatory of Music offers small group instrument lessons, music theory classes, and ensemble classes. Students take instrumental or vocal classes in small groups and have the option of participating in a real orchestra as part of the program’s ensemble experience.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Meets only on Saturday mornings during Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters; each quarter runs ten weeks with three 50-minute classes each Saturday
• Price: One low-cost package tuition price covers three classes per Saturday for ten weeks; additional classes may be added for an additional fee
Instrumental and vocal classes are taught in small groups by specialists who are trained music educators. The basic class package each Saturday morning includes a small group instrument lesson, a music theory class, and an ensemble class, and the program does not offer one of these classes without the others in the basic package. Students enrolled in Saturday Conservatory of Music are required to participate in their respective available school music programs.
Saturday Conservatory of Music is a non-profit organization and a project of Community Partners. In 1966, music coordinator Carl Bruce, his wife Ellen Bruce, and Robert Runge, Professor of Music Education at California State University, Los Angeles, organized the Cal State L.A. Saturday Conservatory of Music, and the program was developed by public school music educators. Saturday Conservatory of Music is a non-profit organization that brings quality music education to the children of the greater Los Angeles area and strongly supports school music programs. The Saturday Conservatory of Music expresses its gratitude to Ms. Sandra Alley, Superintendent Jim Symonds, and the Governing Board of the San Gabriel Unified School District for the use of Jefferson Middle School’s facilities. Volunteers are described as an essential part of the organization, and the program seeks energetic, dedicated individuals who would like to make a difference in the community.
It is mandatory for each student to have an instrument to practice on and to bring that instrument to class. Practice is mandatory, with 20 to 30 minutes per day per instrument as the minimum, and attendance is mandatory, with missed classes resulting in being dropped from the class. Unruly or destructive behavior results in removal from the program without refund. The program notes that many students have gone on to local arts high schools and universities such as The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, Orange County High School of the Arts, University of Southern California, University of California, Berkeley, and Juilliard.
