About

Kathak Classes offers instruction in kathak dance through structured kathak classes. The program includes specific class levels such as Introduction to Kathak, Beginning I, Beginning II, Intermediate I, and Intermediate II, as well as teacher trainings, professional teacher training, artist development, CDYC Training (by audition only), CDYC Advance Adults, and a school show.

• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Winter-Spring 2026 session runs January 18–May 22 as a 16-week semester, with no classes during winter break (February 16–22) and spring break (April 12–17). Winter-spring 2025 is also a 16-week session.

The program is part of the Chitresh Das Institute, which offers world class performance and instruction in the art of kathak dance, including world class training in kathak dance and new student classes for ages 6–60+. The Institute also includes professional and pre-professional dance companies (Chitresh Das Dance and Chitresh Das Youth Company) and a fellowship program developing the next generation of professional kathak dancers and teachers, and it follows the 9 Principles of Pandit Chitresh Das. The mission of the Chitresh Das Institute is to ignite the world’s passion for kathak dance and Indian classical arts, with art rooted in tradition, responding to the now, and guided by community, legacy, and seva (service).

Leadership for the Institute includes Artistic Director Charlotte Moraga, Executive Director Celine Schein Das, Operations & School Manager Bhavya K. Jain, Youth Company Assistant Director Asavari Ukidve, and Video Production Specialist Kritika Sharma. The kathak dance faculty includes Charlotte Moraga (Co-Founder), Anita Pai (Founding Teacher), Preeti Zalavadia (Co-Founder), Asavari Ukidve (Founding Teacher), Celine Schein Das (Co-Founder), Rucha Khisti, Gauri Bhatnagar, Samyukta Patil, and Vanita Mundhra, with teaching assistants Avani Viswanathan, Ananti Badhwar, and Maahi Desai. The Board of Directors consists of Celine Schein Das, Lori Laqua, Charlotte Moraga, and Preeti Zalavadia, and the Advisory Board includes Ramen Chakrabarti, Atashi Chakravorty, and Fahmida Bangert.

Through its Art for the Planet initiative, the Chitresh Das Institute presents art with a message and is committed to connecting new generations to the power and depth of this tradition through the teachings, philosophy, and pedagogy of Pandit Chitresh Das.
