About

Growing Up in America K-12 Art, Essay, and Video Contest invites students to create original work in three formats: art, essay, and video. The contest is hosted by AACI and NBC Bay Area as part of the Growing Up in America (GUA) program, which was formerly called Growing Up Asian in America.

• Ages: 5–18 years old

AACI was founded in 1973 and serves communities in Santa Clara County, including immigrants and refugees of all backgrounds. AACI’s mission is to strengthen the resilience and hope of diverse community members by improving their health and well-being. AACI provides culturally and linguistically competent services, and its culturally sensitive health and wellness services are accessible to all in need, without regard to immigration status or ability to pay. A sliding scale for fees is available and based on income.

Community members have described AACI’s services as including explanations of health conditions in Vietnamese with immediate question-and-answer time, and classes led by coaches trained by community health workers that include simple exercises such as finding hidden pictures and coloring. Testimonials also mention that participants meet friends of similar age groups and feel comfortable visiting partner organizations.
