About
San Jose Dance Theatre Academy offers ballet training that includes Pre-Ballet, Primary Youth Ballet, Intermediate Ballet, Advanced Ballet, and an Adult Open Program. Dancers take part in Nutcracker productions, Spring Showcase productions, and a range of summer options such as Summer PreBallet Classes, Summer PreBallet Dance Camp, Summer Academy Classes, Summer Intensive, PreBallet Summer Workshops, and My First Ballet Steps Summer Workshops. The academy also offers Placement Classes, trial or placement classes, and teen or adult drop-in classes.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Price: You can take a drop in class or buy a ten class multipass and save. Pay annually, by semester, or monthly via installment plan. Tuition is prorated from the dancer’s start date. Prorated tuition does not extend to absences or early withdrawal from the program. Performance fees are separate and will be announced with each production.
San Jose Dance Theatre Academy states that all instructors are current or former professional dancers. The organization describes itself as a classical ballet performance company and academy and as a non-profit organization. It notes “60 Years of Ballet Excellence in San Jose,” and Advanced Ballet (Levels 6–7) is described as pre-professional training focused on refined technique, artistry, and performance, with advanced dancers taking on principal roles in productions and serving as role models within the academy. Eligible students may audition for SJDT’s Studio Company for additional performance opportunities, and performance is described as a key part of training through professional-level Nutcracker and Spring Showcase opportunities. Full-time enrollment is expected for academy dancers in Level 1 and up, new students are accepted year-round, and teen or adult drop-in classes are available at a per-class rate. Families are instructed to have dancers arrive on time and in the correct uniform with hair done and proper shoes, and to wear a cover-up when entering or exiting the building.
San Jose Dance Theatre’s mission is to develop, foster, and promote the positive impact of dance in Silicon Valley through accessible performances, excellent training, creative outreach, and collaboration, and to enrich human experience while inspiring an appreciation of movement and music for an expanding and diverse audience. The organization notes that it is proudly supported by community organizations and that it promotes the art of dance through community outreach initiatives and performances. One parent, Yessika L. from San Jose, shares that her child Victoria has made more friends, participated in both productions, achieved her goal of being a Cookie in The Nutcracker, and plans to return next year and attend summer classes.
