Gigamind Explorer Education was founded in 2011 by a group of professionals in the education, psychology, and STEM fields. As a nonprofit organization serving the education community, its mission is to promote children's positive attitude and inspire their interest in learning math. The program promotes abacus and Math Olympiad programs and offers Montessori Early Mathematics, Abacus & Mental Arithmetic, Math Olympiad, national mathematics competitions preparation, Mandarin Language & Culture, STEM Summer Camp, Creative Thinking Summer Camp, and after-school care. Its curriculum is designed according to children's growth and psychological development, and the materials are created and modified based on a group of teachers’ years of professional teaching experience. The program states that it respects and values each child's individual development and learning ability and uses diverse teaching techniques to accommodate different learning styles. It also states that it encourages students to take initiative to explore their potential, reach new milestones, and achieve their learning goals, and that it believes every student is unique but shares the same ambition and curiosity to explore.
Students in the abacus and mental arithmetic components learn how to use an abacus to solve arithmetic problems and to hold mental images to calculate using their own mental power. The Math Olympiad program offers students the chance to explore content and problems in branches of mathematics not conventionally covered at school, and an ongoing series is described as strengthening analytical skill and outside-the-box thinking in creative problem solving. The Creative-Thinking Workshop relates math and creativity in a workshop format and uses interesting problems related to real life. The math test prep component states that students will have a firm understanding of the test subjects, be equipped with test-taking skills, and feel confident before taking the test, and that its ultimate goal is to enrich analytical and problem-solving skills and equip students to take math competitions. The Creative Thinking Summer Camp focuses on different kinds of creative thinking and logic skills, with math as a regular basis, in a structured and small-size class where students learn through games and fun activities. The program states that it prepares young children to meet kindergarten entrance expectations in math and that children's early experience of mathematics lays a foundation for their future mathematics learning and positive math attitudes.
Gigamind Explorer Education reports that its programs have been experienced by more than 500 students in different schools and that it mainly serves students from San Mateo, Foster City, San Carlos, Belmont, Redwood City, Palo Alto, Burlingame, San Bruno, and South San Francisco, while also providing enrichment programs to after-schools in the Bay Area. Its educators are certificated instructors of Abacus Calculation with Two Hands and Mental Arithmetic Skill and Math Olympiad, and all instructors have teaching experience with Pre-K–12 students in the U.S. and other Asian countries. One parent testimonial states that a 5-year-old child attending for about half a year gained a better sense of numbers and a love for math, and that the child understands how 10 ones equal 1 ten because of the abacus and now knows what the numbers mean, with the parent hoping the child continues to enjoy “playing” with numbers.
