Golden State Taekwondo’s mission statement is “Building Community Through Martial Arts.” The school is owned by Deb Pedersen and Chris Jensen, and instructors include Chris Jensen, Marty Mackowski, Mike Lipinski, and Deb Pedersen. Owners Deb Pedersen and Chris Jensen opened the studio in 1988, taking over from their instructor Marty Mackowski, who founded Mackowski’s TKD in 1965. The program describes itself as one of the oldest and most respected martial arts schools in the San Francisco Bay Area and states that it has trained thousands of children and adults over the years. It offers adult and junior classes with experienced instructors in a spacious facility and welcomes spectators, with the option to try a free lesson.

Golden State Taekwondo states that its roots can be traced back to Bodhidharma in 400 BC, and in the United States to Ki Hwang Kim, who was instructor to Marty Mackowski. The program describes its focus as building character, strength, and fostering community, and it summarizes its role as building community through martial arts. One parent, Manidipa Bhattacharaya, reports that her children trained at Golden State Taekwondo, achieved numerous world championships, and that the club felt like a second home for them.
