Clay Life Art Studios LLC & TheClayLife.com was founded in 2022 in the San Francisco Bay Area as a for-profit community-focused pottery studio. The owner, David Paulley, has been a graphic designer since 1988 and is a self-taught potter, sculptor, instructor, active community member, and founder of CLAsS & TCL. The leadership team includes David Paulley; Sculpture Instructor Cindy Chan; Studio Gurus Amy Hoang and Michael De Leon; Tuesday morning and evening Sculpture Instructor Sam Blauw; and Studio Manager and Hand-Building Instructor Cathy Spitters. Ceramic artist and sculptor Michael DeLeon holds a master’s degree in Fine Arts focused in Ceramics from The Academy of Art University, San Francisco, with directed study under Richard Shaw at Berkeley and John Toki. Clay Life Art Studios LLC & TheClayLife.com is described by its owner as a one-person-owned small business created using his life savings, and as a teaching studio where memberships, teambuilding, classes, and private lessons are offered in Wheel Throwing, Hand-Building, and Sculpture. The studio is described as THE ORIGINAL & FIRST MID-PENINSULA CLAY STUDIO in the City of San Mateo and is a winner of the 2024 and 2025 Best of San Mateo in the category of Best Art Classes. The studio offers Youth Classes, Parents & Me Classes, private lessons, team building, and open studio hours for members. According to the owner, support for the studio is described as a vote of confidence and trust and is linked to a pledge to create a space that fosters the next generation of ceramic artists and knits the community together through shared creative experiences. The community involvement of owner David Paulley includes using his skill set to offer educational opportunities for potters in local communities and maintaining a studio practice that connects with the community and creates intersections between ephemeral ideas and functional forms.
