Taylor’s House of Karate was founded in 2000 by Steve Willey and Daythan Taylor. Leadership at the dojo includes Master Derek Bentley, along with Georgie and Steve. The dojo is described as a family owned karate school in Marin County, and the dojo feels like family. One parent notes that belts are earned, not given, and that kids are segregated into groups by ability, with a large facility and plenty of instructors and a program that allows children to attend as many classes as they like whenever they want, with classes offered six days a week.

In the program’s mission, Master Derek Bentley states: “We are not just about teaching karate, we believe in teaching kids the next step in life, how to function, how to go about their days making the right decisions. Karate is not just about kicking and punching, it’s about thinking what’s the first step, what’s the next step, what are the later steps. It's about shaping character and molding people into confident, respectful, and disciplined human beings.”

Parents and students describe Taylor’s House of Karate as a wonderful family owned karate school in Marin County where teachers are very supportive while still maintaining high standards, and where there is a diverse, kind community of students and families. Multiple parents report their children attending for several years, some 4–5 days per week, and describe teachers who model and teach self control and respect through karate, offer discipline, fitness and personal challenge in a supportive environment, and keep classes engaging so they are never slow or boring. One long-time student who started at age 5 describes returning to visit numerous times after moving away and says the staff always remembered the family. Several parents mention that Taylor’s is their second home, that it is a welcoming place, and that it is a great community of kids and parents to be a part of.

In a description of the program’s role in the community, the Marin Independent Journal quotes: “Really we’re just trying to create a community here, so that, right after school, the kids don’t have to roam around. They can come directly here, hang out, be with other kids, and all driven in the same direction: training, focusing, having fun and just getting better at things.”
