PhotoArts Marin, 47 De Luca Pl #3, #3, San Rafael, CA 94901
About
PhotoArts Marin Young Photographers Classes focuses on understanding the camera, the craft and art of photography, and photojournalism based on everyday life. Students take part in Photoshop classes, weekend field trips, and projects such as telling the story of natural and urban landscapes, creating a sense of place and space, and photographing the full moon rise over the Golden Gate Bridge and night scenes. The program includes activities that ask students to slow down, see, and create artistic images.
• Ages: 13–18 years old
• Schedule: Private Young Photographers classes total eight hours, held in one to one-and-a-half hour minimums, with options of two, four, six, or eight hours that must be completed within time frames ranging from 60 days to one year; two weekend field trips per month run from late spring through early fall.
• Price: The Private Individual class is $750.00 per student; semi-private classes for up to three students can be arranged on request; field trips cost $20.00 plus incidentals such as the ferry fee to Angel Island; private in-person, Zoom streaming, or hybrid classes cost $300.00 for two hours, $550.00 for four hours, $825.00 for six hours, and $950.00 for eight hours, and all classes must be taken within one year of the purchase date.
Each private session includes a class guide, an easy operation guide for the student’s camera, and an “everything you ever need to know about photography” reference sheet, and is created around how the student learns, the student’s interests, and the family’s schedule. A student must have taken at least one private class with PhotoArts Marin in order to participate in field trips, and parents are strongly encouraged to attend field trips. The program offers private in-person, Zoom streaming, or hybrid in-person/Zoom streaming classes, and ongoing support is available to every student regardless of where they are in the world. PhotoArts Marin was founded in 2007 and has been recreated as PhotoArts California offering online, in-person, or hybrid classes.
PhotoArts Marin Young Photographers Classes is led by Glen Graves, founder of PhotoArts Marin. The instructor attended the Brooks Institute in the mid-1970s and has worked with clients including General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, US Air, New York Port Authority, Fairmont Hotels, Lear Crop, Delta Faucets, Formica Corp, Wood Mode Custom Cabinets, Wine Spectator, Architectural Digest, Robby Report, Cakebread Cellars, Merry Edwards Wines, Chalk Hill Estates, and other national and international clients. The instructor worked for three years with Tanya Braunstein in Santa Rosa High School’s ArtQuest photography program as a guest photographer/artist and began working with the Santa Rosa School’s ArtQuest classes for young photographer/artists in 2006, mentoring and teaching individuals and classes about the art and craft of photography for most of their time working as a photographer.
Parent testimonials describe the instructor as well prepared, thoughtful, conscientious, experienced, positive, nonjudgmental, and encouraging, and note that the course is well organized with craft and artistic vision alternating throughout and that field trips reinforce class concepts. One parent reports that their 14-year-old son’s photography and Photoshop teacher over four months communicated well and inspired confidence in their son’s efforts and work. Another parent reports that their 15-year-old son enjoyed learning from a professional photographer, appreciated the pacing of the teaching, and particularly liked the field trips, including understanding photojournalism better after visiting China Camp and hearing stories of its history. A third parent states that their 15-year-old has started to embrace the art and skill of photography and is feeling much better about himself.
