Little Scholars Nest Preschool and Afterschool has been providing early education and childcare to families in the San Ramon Valley since 2007, with its first graduation ceremony held in 2008 and testimonials saved since that time. The program states that the early years of a child’s life are the most significant period, as this is when the foundation is laid for the overall development of the individual. The preschool is licensed by the State of California under License Number 073419218 and was nominated for the 2012 Readers Choice Award “Best Preschool in San Ramon” by the San Ramon Patch.

The program offers three different child care options: a Preschool Program, a Pre-Kindergarten Program, and an Afterschool Program. It enrolls 6 preschool students, 6 pre-K students, and 2 afterschool students (TK or K), with a small Little Scholar to teacher ratio of 3 Little Scholars to 1 teacher. A structured reading program introduces complex reading concepts at a steady pace to make children advanced readers by the time they leave for kindergarten.

Children have exposure to dance, gymnastics, computer skills, and art and crafts in addition to preschool learning. Little Scholars Nest partners with California School of Gymnastics and Anapurna’s Dance School to offer weekly gymnastics and dance classes, and Little Scholars perform each year on stage at Anapurna’s Annual Dance Show, including an annual stage performance in front of a 200+ auditorium audience.

The preschool reopened in a newly built facility in August 2021, with an outdoor-indoor architectural design and a preschool garden. Children spend as much time outdoors as indoors, including an hour of outdoor play, exploring the preschool garden, weekly nature walks, and visits to two local neighborhood parks, and depending on the season, they may bring home a basket of fruits from fruit trees. The program focuses on caring for the preschool garden, learning about Earth Day, and building basic building blocks for loving nature and caring for the planet.

Organic homemade meals, including breakfast, lunch, and an evening snack, are cooked daily in the preschool’s full-service kitchen. Example menu items include homemade crepes, waffles, creamy pesto pasta, Chole Masala with rice, green salad, chocolate chip cookies, baby carrots, crackers, hummus, and 2% organic milk. The program prioritizes sustainability by offering plant-based milk options through an Almond Cow, using non-toxic cookware from Caraway, and non-toxic, BPA-free mealtime utensils from The Saturday Baby.

The program notes that its first batch of Little Scholars are about to graduate college. Community involvement includes partnerships with California School of Gymnastics and Anapurna’s Dance School, as well as prioritizing support for small businesses such as Loomwell Wallpaper and The Saturday Baby utensils.

Parent testimonials describe Little Scholars Nest as “gentle, loving, caring, home away from home” and refer to it as a “home school” where a child is in school every day with “family.” One family notes that the preschool and pre-K program is structured to prepare a child for kindergarten and mentions activities including reading, math, crafts, show and tell, dance, music, gymnastics, Halloween and Christmas performances, and public speaking. Testimonials also mention that children are happy and engaged, that teachers are caring and compassionate, and that families feel the environment is very caring.
