Little Scholars Nest Preschool and Afterschool has been providing early education and childcare to families in the San Ramon Valley since 2007 and has been serving the community for over 14 years. The first batch of Little Scholars students are about to graduate college, and the school has saved testimonials since its first graduation ceremony in 2008. The program offers three different child care options: a Preschool Program, a Pre-Kindergarten Program, and an Afterschool Program for TK or kindergarten, with a total of 6 preschool students, 6 pre-K students, and 2 afterschool students. The program maintains a small Little Scholar to teacher ratio of 3 Little Scholars to 1 teacher.

The preschool’s mission states that the early years of a child’s life are viewed as the most significant period, when the foundation is laid for the overall development of the individual. The program includes a structured reading program that introduces complex reading concepts at a steady pace so that children are advanced readers by the time they leave for kindergarten. Children have exposure to dance, gymnastics, computer skills, and arts and crafts in addition to preschool learning, and they participate in an annual stage performance in front of a 200+ auditorium audience at Anapurna’s Annual Dance Show.

The preschool is licensed by the State of California and was nominated for the 2012 Readers Choice Award “Best Preschool in San Ramon” by the San Ramon Patch (License Number: 073419218). The facility reopened as a newly built preschool in August 2021 and is designed with outdoor–indoor architecture elements and surrounded by a canopy of nature. Children spend as much time outdoors as indoors, including hour-long outdoor play, weekly nature walks, visits to two local neighborhood parks, and time in the preschool garden, and they bring home fruit from on-site fruit trees depending on the season.

The program partners with California School of Gymnastics and Anapurna’s Dance School to offer weekly gymnastics and dance classes. It provides organic homemade breakfast, lunch, and evening snacks cooked daily in the preschool’s full-service kitchen, along with a monthly menu that includes examples of specific meals and snacks. The preschool focuses on nutrition of body and mind with healthy organic meals and prioritizes sustainability by offering plant-based milk options through an Almond Cow, using non-toxic cookware from Caraway, and non-toxic, BPA-free utensils from The Saturday Baby. Children help care for the preschool garden and learn about Earth Day as part of this sustainability focus, and the school prioritizes supporting small businesses such as Loomwell Wallpaper and The Saturday Baby utensils.

Parent testimonials describe the program as “gentle, loving, caring, home away from home” and refer to it as a “home school” where a child is “in school every day with family.” One family notes that their child’s preschool and pre-K program included reading, math, crafts, show and tell, dance, music, gymnastics, Halloween and Christmas performances, and a focus on public speaking that encouraged speaking in front of an audience. Another family shares that their child “has grown and learned so much,” “come out of her shell,” and “experienced so many new things,” and they thank the teachers for their hard work and dedication to the kids.
