Demura-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Genbu-Kai (Hombu Dojo Classes) offers training in karate-do, kobu-do, batto-do, and karate, including weapons training. Genbu Kai is a worldwide martial arts organization dedicated to traditional karate since 1965 and serves as the Hombu Dojo of Demura-Ha Shito-Ryu and Demura-Ha Shotokan. It was founded by the late Shihan Fumio Demura (1940–2023), whose formal foundation was in Shito-Ryu (Itosu-kai) under Master Ryusho Sakagami, and whose training also included batto-do under Master Taizaburo Nakamura, founder of modern Toyama-Ryu Batto-Do. Genbu-Kai is rooted in Shihan Mabuni's traditional Shito-Ryu and preserves Shihan Demura's lifetime of training in empty-hand karate and traditional weapons, including kobudo and batto-do, within Genbu-Kai, Rengo-Kai. His legacy continues through Sensei Thanh Nguyen and Sensei David Hines, along with members worldwide, emphasizing kihon, kata, bunkai (application), self-defense, and traditional values such as discipline, respect, strength, loyalty, and tradition. The organization is an international group with over 50 locations worldwide offering classes in karate-do, kobu-do, and batto-do, with strong integration of kobudo as part of the complete martial education, including Okinawa Kobudo weapons such as bo, sai, tonfa, kama, nunchaku, eku, and tsuno tekko. Kokusai Batto-Do within the program emphasizes drawing, cutting, kumitachi, and kata with the katana, including tameshigiri (test-cutting). Community involvement includes the Nikkei Games Karate Tournament at the Cal State Long Beach Pyramid, the Japan Culture Fair, and the Genbu-Kai Annual Summer Picnic at Irvine Regional Park, which features a baseball game, potluck lunch, pinata, and water balloon toss.
