Senshi Judo is a non-profit judo gym and dojo that focuses on making martial arts accessible to everyone in the Santa Ana and broader community. Beginner kids’ judo classes include a 2-week free trial. The program’s mission is to empower the next generation to build resilience, integrity, strength and self-confidence through martial arts and mentorship, and it states that every child deserves access to a safe space to build character, resilience and life-long skills. Its values are summarized as RISE: Resilience, Integrity, Strength, Empowerment, and it shares a quote from Kano Jigoro: “The purpose of the study of judo is to perfect yourself and to contribute to society.”
The Junior Judoka class is open to children ages 5 to 12 years old, the Fundamentals class is open to all students ages 13 and up, and the Advanced class is open to all students ages 13 and up with a rank of green belt or higher. Senshi Judo has a special needs program that highlights benefits of judo for children with ADD, ADHD, autism spectrum, and other intellectual and developmental disabilities, and it enlists local Board Certified Behavioral Therapists (BCBAs) from Riverside Youth Judo Club to assess each special needs child’s learning capacity and determine the best way to integrate them in practice.
Sensei Mohammed Ghasemi is the Founder and Head Instructor and will be primarily leading all training sessions and developing programs. He started judo at 16 years old under Sensei Reza Madani in Karaj, Iran, trained there for 8 years, traveled through Europe and Asia, and came to the U.S. in 2013. He resumed training under Sensei Juan Montenegro at Orange County Judo Training Center in Garden Grove, actively competed and coached in multiple local and national tournaments, and received his Shodan in 2015. Co-Founder and Assistant Instructor Grace Claudio began judo at 15 years old, joined Waipahu High School’s judo team, later trained at Leeward Judo Club in Pearl City under Sensei Kevin Asano, then joined Orange County Judo Training Center in 2014, and currently holds her Ikkyu; she is largely involved in the kids program and oversees daily operations along with sales and marketing efforts.
Students are required to wear a clean gi (uniform) during training sessions at all times, and single-weave gis may be purchased directly at the dojo through the Club Administrator. One testimonial from A.T. in Santa Ana states that this dojo is very good, that the reviewer has trained in judo, hapkido, aikido, and jujitsu, and that Sensei Mo is one of the best martial arts teachers they have trained with in years, teaching with a rare commitment and passion to the art of judo. Senshi Judo states that it strives to provide access to martial arts for all youth and young adults throughout Orange County, especially in low-income and underprivileged communities.
