Santa Barbara Botanic Garden was established in 1926 and is the first botanic garden to focus exclusively on native plants. The Garden states that campers experience the wonders found within California’s habitats while learning what makes this home unique and worthy of protection, with themes centered on nature connection, native plant conservation, or outdoor discovery. The Garden describes the camp as offering a safe and enriching environment to explore native plant habitats, and notes that counselors-in-training (CIT) can earn high school community service hours. The Garden has dedicated a century of work to better understand the relationship between plants and people, and as a 501(c)(3), it is committed to being transparent about its operations and performance. It also supports the local community through in-kind donations for nonprofit events.
Parent and visitor comments about the Garden include descriptions such as a “beautiful gem of a Botanical Garden nestled on 78 acres in Mission Canyon” with “miles of hiking and walking trails” and native California plants, “sustainable gardens with walkable paths” and “interesting exhibits,” and a place that “screams to youngsters and oldsters alike, to come wander, come play, come learn.” Other visitors describe it as “a stunning garden encompassing many different plants and beauty everywhere” and “peaceful and tucked away in the mountains overlooking the world,” and one parent notes that a young child enjoyed “crossing the creek, running up the rope bridges, crawling under tree roots and so much more.”
