About

Sea League offers ocean-based activities including surfing, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), kayaking, sailing, tide pooling, sea cave kayaking, snorkeling at the Channel Islands, boogie boarding, abalone shell scavenging, fishing, swim lessons, and boat trips. Week-long immersive overnight camps take place at Dos Pueblos Ranch and include activities such as sea cave kayaking and snorkeling at the Channel Islands. The program uses small teams with UC Santa Barbara student mentors.

• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: After-school and weekend programs run April–November, and summer camps run June–August; week-long immersive overnight camps are offered.

Sea League began in 2020 and is described as “like little league for nature connection,” with a mission to “make friends with the ocean” and to emphasize connection over competition. The mission states that the ocean instantly connects youth with wild nature, promotes a healthy lifestyle, and fosters a sense of stewardship, while mentoring kids through ocean-based recreation where they can learn, have fun, and build meaningful relationships. The program is written by Founder Chris Ragland and is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization fiscally sponsored by another entity. Sea League serves hundreds of youth each year, many of whom are experiencing the ocean in this way for the first time, and leads The Big Blue Bridge project with the YMCA to provide swim lessons that aim to close the diversity gap in ocean sports and make ocean programs more accessible. The organization describes itself as part of a movement to reshape the relationship with the ocean for coastal communities throughout California and to diversify ocean sports.

Parent feedback includes reports of kids seeming happier and having a sense of freedom, appreciation for the variety of activities and unstructured time, and positive experiences with overnight stays at camp. Other parents describe Sea League as empowering for their child, noting a renewed love and respect for the ocean, a focus on fun, respect, and education rather than competition, and strong community, care, and support from the coaches.
