About
Santa Cruz County Junior Golf Association offers a golf program that includes tournaments, golf clinics, golf lessons, and a Rules, Etiquette, Pace and Safety (REPS) course. The program also runs a Bay Cup, which is a Ryder Cup match play style tournament held against Pebble Beach Junior Golf Association. Players compete in five divisions for boys and girls—Green, Copper, Bronze, Silver, and Gold—with specific tees and hole formats for each division.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
Founded in 1993, Santa Cruz County Junior Golf Association is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers and serves all of Santa Cruz County. Its mission is to offer junior golfers aged six to eighteen the chance to engage in a structured, secure, and enjoyable golf program, and it is dedicated to reducing financial or other obstacles that could hinder participation in the sport of golf. The program’s philosophy includes learning rules and etiquette through the REPS course, progressing through clinics and lessons, and measuring progress through tournament play.
In Green division tournaments, players play 9 holes with tee boxes placed in the fairway around 200 yards from the green, and there is an 8-stroke maximum score per hole (“circle eight” rule). Copper division tournaments are 9 holes played from the red tees, Bronze division tournaments are 18 holes from the red tees, Silver division tournaments are 18 holes from the white tees (red tees for girls), and Gold division tournaments are 18 holes from the blue tees (red for girls). Advancement between Green, Copper, Bronze, Silver, and Gold card levels is based on qualifying scores or wins.
The tournament points system awards 10 points for first place, 8 for second, 6 for third, 4 for fourth, 2 for fifth, and 1 point for players outside the top five. Points leaders in each division are recognized at an end-of-season awards ceremony and are eligible for the Bay Cup. Medals are awarded in each division for 1st and 2nd place. In Bay Cup competition against Pebble Beach Junior Golf Association, Santa Cruz is trailing with 3 wins, 1 tie, and 5 losses.
Caddies are required for players 10 years old and under and are recommended for all Green division players, and caddies are only allowed in the Green and Copper divisions. An SCJG volunteer walks with each Green division group to help with rules, scoring, and pace of play. The dress code requires a collared shirt and pants or shorts, with no jeans or denim. All players must walk, and pull carts are allowed. GPS and range finders in tournament mode are allowed to obtain distances. Caddies may carry the player’s bag, push or pull the bag on a cart, or use a golf cart, and golf carts are allowed, if the course permits, for spectators, parents, and caddies only, while players are not allowed to ride in carts.
