Santa Monica Basketball Academy states that its goal is to teach basketball fundamentals and all it encompasses in mind and body, with a mission summarized as “teach. coach. confidence.” The program teaches fundamental skills and core values of the game, including teamwork, respect, determination, and community. A stated motto from Coach Wes is, “It's better to play and lose, then sit and win.”

SUBWAY has teamed up with Santa Monica Basketball Academy to provide lunch delivered to camp, with Subway lunch available for delivery daily or weekly, and Handel's ice cream is provided each Friday at camp. Handel's ice cream is described as “back each Friday.” SMBA is repped by NIKE, and SMBA uniforms are bought separately from a personal NIKE rep.

Players are asked to wear basketball attire including sneakers and to bring a basketball and plenty of water for hydration. For Open Runs, players must wear athletic attire, with no pajama pants, hoodies, hats, or beanies, and they are asked to bring water and snacks, take water breaks whenever needed, and bring plenty of water, with the note that players need to hydrate and will not be able to eat in the gym. The program notes that player walk-ins are welcomed and that families can “Build Your Squad” by gathering 5–7 players from the same grade level. Expert coaches are described as boosting player skills and game IQ, with a focus on fundamentals, teamwork, and competition.
