About

USA Sumo Educational Events and Sumo Classes includes sumo lectures, sumo demonstrations, and sumo lifestyle demonstrations. Participants can see and learn sumo techniques and sumo training through sumo clinics, sumo tournaments, sumo shows, and Sumo Sushi Shows. The program also offers Q & A sessions with World Sumo Champion athletes.

USA Sumo was established in 1998, and the US Sumo Open has been held annually since 2001. Sumo Sushi Shows have been held since 2012, with more than 130 live Sumo Sushi Shows since that time. The US Sumo Open is described as the largest and longest-running annual sumo competition worldwide outside of Japan, with over 953 international athletes from more than 42 different countries, including many National or World Sumo Champions. USA Sumo states that it is dedicated to teaching sumo techniques and tradition to men and women of all sizes, ages, and backgrounds, training world class sumo athletes who compete internationally, educating the public about traditional Japanese sumo and international amateur sumo, promoting the sport of sumo through demonstrations, tournaments, and other events, and supporting international efforts to make sumo an Olympic sport.

Andrew Freund began training in sumo in 1997 after seeing a sumo demonstration and began offering practices in 1998. World Champion sumo wrestlers and other elite sumo champions participate in USA Sumo events, and Sumo Sushi Shows are described as sold-out shows with World Champions. Featured sumo stars from USA Sumo have appeared on hundreds of TV shows, commercials, and films, including work on major motion pictures such as “Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Oceans 13,” “47 Ronin,” “Zoolander 2,” “John Wick: Chapter 2,” and “John Wick: Chapter 4.” USA Sumo wrestlers have appeared on National Geographic, Discovery, MTV, and many other outlets, and a team of sumo wrestlers was featured on “America’s Got Talent” in 2010, with additional appearances as special guests on “The Bachelorette” (2015), “To Tell the Truth” (2017), and The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2017). Media coverage has included CBS “Saturday Morning,” USA Today, FOX Sports, Grappling Magazine, the LA Times, GQ Magazine, and the Long Beach Post.

USA Sumo’s community involvement includes sumo lectures and demonstrations at many types of schools and a Sumo Education Regional Tour at 10 universities and high schools throughout Southern California. The organization has given multiple lectures for medical staff at Cedars-Sinai Hospital and provided sumo training for medical staff in multiple nursing homes. USA Sumo has collaborated on Grand Sumo Las Vegas and Grand Sumo Los Angeles and has participated in the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The organization also notes appearances on TV shows, commercials, films, and documentaries as part of its outreach.
