En Garde Fencing was founded in January 2008 with the stated goal of providing high-quality fencing instruction in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County and creating a vibrant community of fencers in the North Bay. The leadership team includes owner and head coach Jim Liebich (Moniteur), along with coaches Joel Overly, Dimitri Elias Nicholson, and Ivar Bjornsson. Jim began coaching in 2000 and earned his Moniteur teaching degree from the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) in both foil and épée, and he has served as former Vice-Chair of the Northern California Division of the United States Fencing Association and is a current member of its Executive Committee.
Jim teaches beginning fencing and archery at Sonoma State University and is often seen conducting demonstrations around the county to promote the sports he teaches. One parent reported that their son made friends, learned fair play, got a workout, and learned to fence at En Garde Fencing, and that Jim makes everyone feel welcome and creates a supportive community. Another parent shared that their daughter is learning archery and fencing there and described the teachers as really caring about the kids and bonding with them. A participant noted a wide range of equipment and described the instructors as friendly and open, and another comment mentioned affordable entry-level options and called it a great service to the community.
