About

Fulton Community School & Farm is an early childhood education preschool where children take part in garden design, planting, tending to plants, harvesting, and caring for animals. The program includes family culture studies, storytelling, art studio exploration, and mindfulness practices, and children participate in daily operations of the farm with food systems education from seed to table. Learning at the school is nature-based, project-based, and guided by social constructivism, with experiences heavily inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach.

• Ages: 2–5 years old

Fulton Community School & Farm serves 75 children and is described as the first preschool of its kind in Sonoma County, with a farm and nature focus and an outdoor environment that plays a significant role in the educational experience. The program uses sustainable practices such as reusable materials, organic farming, water conservation, and composting, and emphasizes both mental and physical well-being through time in nature and mindfulness practices. Its mission is to respect and honor the whole child, inspire curiosity, support cognitive, social, and emotional growth, view children as citizens of the world, and work with families and the community to build a healthy foundation for the future. The school holds license number LIC 493009877.

In October 2017, Mark West Community Preschool was lost in the Tubbs fire, and the model for Fulton Community School & Farm brought together private industry, nonprofit organizations, public agencies, local government, and community members to make the new school possible. Community partners include First 5 Sonoma County, California Community Lender, United Way of the Wine Country, NCRC&DC, City of Santa Rosa, Sonoma County Vintners Foundation, Community Child Care Council of Sonoma County, and countless individual donors who together donated over $100,000, with special thanks noted for Supervisor James Gore and District Director Jenny Chamberlin.
