Roustabout Theater has been a federally recognized nonprofit since 2005. Its mission is to build a regional theater in Sonoma County producing Masterworks of the 20th Century and new plays in their West Coast premieres, while also sustaining an actor training program for all ages. The Apprentice Program is described as award-winning and features professionally produced performances with actors, singers, and dancers ages 11–20, along with intensive training in weekly classes and periodic Master Classes delivered by Tony Award–winning composers, Broadway actors, and nationally recognized casting directors. Roustabout Theater describes itself as one of the leading theatrical training and performance programs in the San Francisco Bay Area and as Sonoma County’s creative home for live theater and theater training, and it notes equity, diversity, and inclusion commitments that include anti-racist and anti-oppression training for staff and board.

The leadership team includes Founder and Artistic Director Clark Houston Lewis and Director of Education William Davis, with Clark Houston Lewis serving as President of the Board of Directors and Dr. William Davis, DVM, serving as Secretary/Treasurer of the Board of Directors. Staff credentials include Clark Houston Lewis, who holds an M.A. from Juilliard in Conducting on scholarship and a B.A. in Music with honors from the University of Virginia; Sheila Brock, who graduated from CalArts with a BFA in Theater Management; William Davis, who studied at SFSU, The American Conservatory Theatre, and U.C. Davis; and Joseph Favolora, whose professional Broadway credits include “Beauty and the Beast” and Cathy Rigby’s “Peter Pan,” with additional roles such as Mr. Mistoffelees in “Cats” (National Tour) and Baby John in “West Side Story” (International Tour). Joseph Favolora has won two San Francisco Bay Area Theater Critic Circle Awards for excellence in choreography, has received awards for his dancing including Mr. Dance of New England, Junior Mr. Dance of America, and East Coast Junior Ballroom Champion, and has taught master classes at the Boston Conservatory of Music in the Modern Dance department and served on faculty at New Dance Group in New York City.

Roustabout Theater reports that it has served thousands of the community’s families and theater lovers through professional productions, classes for all ages, and scholarship programs, and that its programs are made possible in part with funds from Creative Sonoma and the National Endowment for the Arts. Testimonials about the Apprentice Program and its students include comments from Jason Robert Brown, a three-time Tony Award winner; Mario Cantone, a Broadway, film, and TV actor and comedian; and Mary-Mitchell Campbell, a Broadway Music Director for Kristen Chenoweth.
