The Sonoma County Family YMCA states that its camps are a safe and nurturing place where children build self esteem, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility for themselves and the world around them, and it emphasizes core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. The organization describes itself as an inclusive, charitable organization that enriches community through the areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. The Sonoma County Family YMCA states that it is committed to making reasonable efforts to ensure that its facilities, programs, and services are accessible to and usable by the people it serves, including those with disabilities, and that the Y is a smoke-free campus.

For camps located at Rohnert Park schools Hahn, Monte Vista, La Fiesta, Thomas Page, and Lawrence Jones Middle School, families first register with Activity Hero through the school district. All camper Health History and Medical Release forms are due on the first day of camp and must be turned in at the camp site the child is attending, and a copy of the child’s immunization record is required. Parents are asked to inform staff of any allergies or special health conditions. Final cash and check payments are due no later than two weeks before the start of camp, and payments are not accepted at camp sites.

One parent shared that their son was very anxious about attending camp, but after the first day he said he “loves it,” now asks if it is a camp day each morning, and responds with a loud “yes” and a fist pump when it is. The Sonoma County Family YMCA notes a history that includes its founding in Sonoma County in 1954, a program and physical education facility built near downtown Santa Rosa in 1972, an Activity Center added in 1993, a teaching pool added in 1995, and lobby, Child Watch, fitness center, locker room, lounge, and natatorium improvements completed between 2003 and 2005. Financial assistance is available for income-eligible families who wish to participate in camping programs.
