About

The AYSO Santa Ynez Valley Region 180 Youth Soccer Program offers youth soccer through the American Youth Soccer Organization. The program follows AYSO’s approach to youth soccer, including specific philosophies about how teams are formed, how much players participate, and how coaches work with players.

• Ages: 3–18 years old

AYSO’s stated vision for the program is to provide world class youth soccer programs that enrich children’s lives. Its mission is to develop and deliver quality youth soccer programs that promote a fun, family environment based on six philosophies: Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams, Open Registration, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship, and Player Development. The program’s goal is for kids to play soccer, so every player on every team must play at least 50 percent of every game. Each year, new teams are formed to be as evenly balanced as possible so that teams of similar ability play each other. The program is open to all children who want to register and play soccer, with interest and enthusiasm as the only criteria, and there are no elimination try-outs and nobody is cut. AYSO requires coaches to create a positive experience for every boy and girl. The program states that it strives to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude, and it is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO. It also states a belief that all players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, to maximize their enjoyment of the game.

In broader community involvement, the American Youth Soccer Organization has announced a partnership with the US Center for Mental Health & Sport focused on player and volunteer wellness. It has also partnered with Chicago Public Schools to enhance youth sports programming and with the Northland Sports Alliance to expand soccer programming in Kansas City. In terms of recognition, Michael Karon, President of AYSO, was recognized by Stack Sports for his impact in the world of sports volunteering.
