About
Santa Ynez Valley PONY Baseball includes player evaluations, team drafts, practices, and an Opening Day event. The program follows a set calendar that begins with evaluations, moves into team formation and practices, and leads up to Opening Day games.
• Schedule: Player evaluations the week of January 20, 2026; teams drafted the week of January 26, 2026; practices beginning the week of February 23, 2026; Opening Day on March 21, 2026
Santa Ynez PONY Baseball was started in 1975, and the first league had two divisions called Mustang and Bronco. The first board of directors included Duane Serristlev, Ken Verkler, David Jamieson, Dick Pauley, and Frieda Sumpter, and the five founders did not have baseball-aged children at the time. Funding to build the complex where kids play came primarily from Santa Ynez Valley Youth Recreations queen contests. The stated goal of the program’s founders was to build a comprehensive program to teach kids how to play “real” baseball so that Valley teams could be competitive with teams outside the area. The organization highlights its 40+ year history and lists Jenn Matsukas as the SYV PONY Baseball Vice-President. The program’s website is powered by SportsEngine’s Sports Relationship Management (SRM) software.
