Capoeira Mandinga Santa Rosa is part of Capoeira Mandinga, a capoeira group that has existed in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1984, when Mestre Marcelo Pereira started it under the name Senzala Grande, with the name changing in 1995. The leadership team includes Mestre Marcelo, Mestre Indio, Mestre Gafanhoto, Professor Silencio, Mestra Lua de Sertao, Professor Gueirro, Instrutora Trevo, Monitor China, and Monitor Amazonas. Capoeira Mandinga’s mission states that it offers a place to grow, learn new skills, enjoy community, and explore capoeira and its elements of acrobatics, music, creativity, and dance, with classes for people of all ages and levels, and a community that strives to be supportive and growth and happiness oriented. The organization states that it is committed to quality and continues to study and research capoeira to present it to students at its highest level. Capoeira Mandinga has been in the North Bay area since the early 1990s, when Mestre Marcelo’s students Bigode and Gafanhoto began teaching through Santa Rosa public schools and recreation programs.
The program notes that the first class is free, with student and other discounts available, and that special projects for students and all ages are available. It practices capoeira with a lineage from Mestre Suassuna’s Cordão de Ouro, and incorporates training aspects of capoeira Regional, Angola, Miudinho, Contemporânea, and the style created by Mestre Marcelo Caveirinha called capoeira Maneira.
