Mestre Marcelo started capoeira in the 1970s, began teaching in Brazil in the late 1970s, traveled to the United States in 1986, moved to the United States in 1988, originated Senzala Grande in São Paulo in the 1980s, and changed the name to Capoeira Mandinga in 1994. Since Covid, the group has consolidated to Tucson, Arizona; Santa Rosa, California; Vera Cruz, Mexico; Milano, Italy; and Manti, Utah.

The organization’s capoeira lineage from Mestre Suassuna’s Cordão de Ouro is described as one of the most elite in the capoeira world today. Capoeira Mandinga also had a life as a nonprofit organization called the Capoeira Institute and as a performing arts group called Brazil Dance Revue. The group has a dedicated place for Rodas, workshops, and training for all levels. Mestre Marcelo’s unique and strong style was motion captured in the Tekken video game series as the characters Eddie Gordo, Christie Manteiro, and Tiger Jackson.
