About

Tree House Hollow Preschool offers daily activities such as art, stories, songs, movement, nature walks, cooperative games and projects, building, creating, and story writing. Children take part in field trips, including an Adventure Day weekly field trip to regional parks, and spend time harvesting from the garden, preparing snack, and exploring nature in the play spaces. For children who are interested, the program includes math, reading, and writing skills within its play-based, child-led, interest-based approach, with teachers acting as guides who observe, facilitate, and support rather than direct, and a curriculum that is flexible and evolves based on children’s emergent interests.

• Ages: 2–5 years old
• Schedule: Half-day and full-day options during a school year that runs from August through July

Tree House Hollow Preschool is a small, private non-profit, environmentally-based preschool that emphasizes a garden and play area as an important learning environment and operates mostly as an indoor/outdoor school. The program serves organic food, and snack is usually self-serve but also offered family style, with snack available around 10:30. The school year begins in August and ends the following July, with the school following the Twin Hills USD calendar for the school start date, Winter Break, and Spring Break closures. Half-day programming runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with pick up at 3:00 (minimum three days per week), full-day programming runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (minimum three days per week), and A.M. Care is available from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

The program states a bottom-line expectation of physical and emotional safety for all and emphasizes cooperation and peaceful conflict resolution, with small group size, mixed ages, and a low ratio of students to teachers contributing to a “family like” atmosphere. Tree House Hollow Preschool describes its mission as being driven by a strong belief in experiential, child-centered education, with a developmentally appropriate and emergent curriculum that unfolds by observing children’s interests and that places emphasis on reverence for Mother Earth through field trips, art, stories, songs, and movement. The philosophy is to approach academics through children’s play as it naturally arises, not to focus on “school readiness skills,” and to offer a multi-disciplinary approach to learning.

Tree House Hollow Preschool has two campuses, Redwood and Creekside, and identifies itself as a non-profit organization licensed by Community Care Licensing, State of California, with regular inspections and observations by Community Care Licensing. The staff includes 2–3 fully qualified and experienced teachers, and the Campus Director is hands-on and available to shift from an administrative to a teaching role as needed; staff are described as having a lot of experience and a deep understanding of child development, and teachers use documentation to reflect on each child and the group. Adventure Day is a program that provides one full class day in nature with weekly field trips to regional parks, and transportation for Adventure Day is provided by the school. Families are asked to send children in appropriate play clothing for all types of weather conditions, and spare clothing is required because work is often messy. The school notes that about one-third of children go on to Apple Blossom, about one-third to Waldorf-inspired schools, and about one-third to private, charter, or home school programs.
