Shaver Stable Horseback Rides offers guided horseback rides, including group rides and several named trail options. Riders can choose from The Point Ride, the Dorabella Cove Ride, the Evening Ride, or schedule Private Rides.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: The Point Ride runs about 50 minutes to 1 hour; the Dorabella Cove Ride runs about 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours; Private Rides range from 1 to 3 hours.
• Price: The Point Ride: $70; Dorabella Cove Ride: $140; Evening Ride: $120; Private Rides start at $95 at a rate of $95.00 per hour per person with a 4-person maximum; online bookings are subject to convenience fees, which do not apply to phone or in-person bookings.
The program lists real-time availability through an online booking program and accepts online or phone bookings. Online bookings close 24 hours before the requested ride time for standard rides and 48 hours before specialty rides. The Evening Ride requires a minimum of 4 people, is by appointment only, and must be booked 48 hours in advance. Private Rides are by appointment only, require experience to trot or lope at the guide’s discretion, have a 4-person maximum, and require five days’ advance booking to ensure staffing. Reservations require payment in full at the time of booking, there are no refunds, and cancellations are handled at the owner’s discretion based on the incident. Rescheduling requests must be received 24 hours before the scheduled ride time.
Riders must be 6 years or older to ride the trail and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, with no exceptions. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and riders 12 and under are required to wear helmets; helmets are available on-site or families can bring a horse-specific riding helmet. Double riding is not allowed for insurance and safety reasons. Close-toed shoes are required, long pants are recommended, and in most cases riders need to be able to mount from the ground with little or no assistance and must dismount without a block, with guides assisting. The maximum rider weight is 230 pounds with no exceptions, and guides have the right to refuse service. Horseback riding is described as an athletic sport that takes some form of fitness and balance. Mistreatment of horses or guides results in termination of the ride, with the rider walking back to the station and forfeiting the ride rate. Riders are asked to arrive 30 minutes before ride time and to allow enough travel time to do so. Selfie sticks and unmounted GoPros are not allowed.
The trail passes Camp Edison and the back side of the Museum of the Central Sierra, and also goes along the outskirts of Shaver Lake and through the meadows of Dorabella Cove, which is the halfway point of the Dorabella Cove Ride. There is a large parking lot with horse trailers where visitors park and walk in. The program notes that it is closed for 2025 with plans to reopen in 2026.
