The “ABILITY not DISABILITY” programme started in 2017 and focuses on the ability of the participants and not the disability, with aims that include inspiring people with disabilities to play tennis, increasing opportunities for children and adults with a disability to keep active and social while learning new skills, and giving them the option to join Brentwood Tennis Club’s inclusive coaching and competition programmes if and when they feel comfortable to do so. The club’s stated ethos is “a caring community club,” and its mission is “to nurture a love of tennis,” promoting the social side, health benefits and the positive impact tennis has on mental well-being, and promoting inclusivity, diversity and being open to all.
Ben works with learning disability schools such as Heritage Park, Becton, Mossbrook and Rowan, running tennis sessions in the schools and hosting school visits for learning disability tennis festivals. Through the support of DS Active and their DS Active training programme, the club runs a DS Family Tennis Group for children with Down’s syndrome and their families. Members are collective owners of the club and have a stake in its future, and the club aims to engage as many members as possible in how it is run, including decision making, supporting grassroots tennis, mentoring, day-to-day management and gardening.
Brentwood Tennis Club has received multiple awards, including Sheffield & District Club of the Year in 2019, 2020 and 2024, LTA Yorkshire Club of the Year 2021, LTA Yorkshire Disability Award 2021, LTA North Disability Award 2021, LTA North Club of the Year Highly Commended, and LTA Disability Award UK Top 3.
