Little Movers and Shakers Music Classes is an early childhood music and movement program that offers Mommy and Me classes, in person music programming, online music programming, and pre-recorded music programming. The program also offers music enrichment at preschools or childcare centers, music, meditation and yoga sessions at rehabilitation facilities and nursing homes, and guitar and songwriting lessons for children.
• Ages: 0–6 years old
• Schedule: Summer Session registration is open, with outdoor Mommy and Me classes offered on weekday and Saturday mornings.
• Price: The Saturday schedule is a bit shorter, so the price is a bit lower.
Little Movers and Shakers is described as an award-winning, research-based early childhood music and movement program that incorporates music teaching approaches including Orff, Edwin Gordon, Dalcroze Eurythmics, Kodaly, and World Music Drumming. The program offers mixed-age classes in a family-style, non-competitive format and offers free demo classes in select classes, as well as a virtual demo video of an online class while the pandemic is still a concern. Makeup classes are only available when families mark themselves absent and are not guaranteed, and weekday classes have staggered dates from Saturday classes. The program is a Bright Horizons approved vendor and brings its music programming to local childcare centers and schools, including childcare centers at major studios throughout the city.
The leadership team includes Cathy Shapiro as Program Developer, Director, and Teacher; Erin Young as Teacher; Savanna Chute as Teacher; and Claire Gordon-Harper as Sub/Teacher. Cathy Shapiro has experience singing on many recordings, for films and documentaries, performing live with various singer-songwriters, currently performs with the Performers Collective, sings with various vocal improvers and choirs, directs Not Your Mama's Choir, and previously worked as a preschool teacher for 4 years. Erin Young has worked for the My Gym Children's Fitness Center franchise for over 13 years, received her BA in Theater Arts from Cal State Long Beach with an emphasis in performance, owns and runs a children's birthday party business called Parties By Erin and Co, and is represented by Angel City Talent. Savanna Chute is a graduate from Cal State Northridge with a BA in theatre, and Claire Gordon-Harper is a graduate of Antioch University with a concentration in psychology and holds an Associate of Arts degree in performance.
The program states that it is passionate about music and the development of children and that it cares deeply about the families it works with. It describes its program experience as creating community connections, early social learning, and a musical foundation for children in a fun, playful environment. One parent testimonial describes teacher Erin as “like the pied piper of children.”
