• Ages: 8–18 years old
In 2012, Act Out Theatre Company identified a large community of kids and families in the greater Long Beach area who wanted a creative outlet but could not afford the options available at that time. The organization describes itself as Southern California’s premier arts organization dedicated to delivering high-caliber theatrical productions, multi-disciplinary arts education, and transformative youth development initiatives, and it states that it empowers youth and adults from all backgrounds by providing accessible opportunities to engage, grow, and lead in the performing arts. Act Out Theatre Company is one of the largest youth-focused performing arts programs in Southern California and describes itself as a true community theater for all ages that unites aspiring young artists with seasoned performers. The program offers four shows throughout the year and states that its goal is to nurture emerging talent, spark creativity, and keep live theatre vibrant and inclusive in Long Beach and beyond, with a vision to bridge the gap between families who can afford high-level arts programs and those who cannot, and to seek opportunities for children who may not be able to participate in arts programs at school. Programs are offered to anyone from 3rd grade and up, and the organization reports that it impacts the lives of over 300 youth and families each year throughout Long Beach and the surrounding communities.
The Junior Board youth mentorship program is for high school students, and Junior Board members are directly responsible for the organization’s social media content and provide direct feedback and ideas about creating and sustaining an inclusive and nurturing artistic environment. The Friends of Act Out is described as a coalition of dedicated parents, staff, volunteers, and community members who support the mission of Act Out Theatre Company.
