Sanford's Martial Arts

Sanford's Martial Arts offers classes in Karate with a focus on traditional Okinawan Karate. The program also includes Shorinji-Ryu Karate, Aiki-Jujutsu that uses joint locks and takedowns, and training in traditional weaponry. Classes are split by age and rank, and the curriculum follows a structured plan that covers practical self-defense fundamentals, fitness, coordination, strength, and body awareness. The program includes weekly mat chats on topics such as showing respect, self-discipline, honesty, bullying, and stranger awareness.

Sanford's Martial Arts has been teaching family martial arts in Soquel Village since 1980. The school offers a free trial that includes two Karate classes, a flexible schedule, and a white belt. The school primarily practices Shorinji-Ryu Karate and also includes Aiki-Jujutsu and traditional weaponry in its style. Sensei Rod Sanford opened the school in 1980 and has taught traditional Okinawan Karate in Santa Cruz County since 1967, and Sensei Sean Sanford serves as head instructor and general manager. The program states that Karate begins and ends with respect, and that character development is placed at the forefront of its teachings.
