Teaching Family Martial Arts in Soquel Village since 1980, Sanford's Karate states that its mission is “Where Karate Begins And Ends With Respect.” The class curriculum is described as very structured and developed to increase students’ fitness, coordination, strength, and body awareness, as well as to teach the fundamentals of practical self-defense. Character development is placed at the forefront of teachings, and weekly mat chats cover subjects such as showing respect, self-discipline, honesty, bullying, and stranger awareness. The school offers a free 2 week trial that includes two weeks of classes, a flexible schedule, and a white belt, with no obligation to sign up for the trial.

Sensei Rod Sanford opened the school in 1980 and has been teaching traditional Okinawan Karate in Santa Cruz County since 1967. The leadership team includes Sensei Rod Sanford and Sensei Sean Sanford, who is the head instructor and general manager.
