About
The Teen Chef Program trains teens in a commercial kitchen while they prepare medically tailored meals for people living with serious illness. Participants take part in commercial kitchen training, teamwork, and communication activities, and they may also join kitchen tours, open house events, and summer cooking camps.
• Schedule: Clients receive 12 weeks of weekly deliveries.
The program operates with support from a Registered Dietitian, and every client receives a nutrition counseling session with a bilingual Registered Dietitian. Its mission is building healthier, more connected communities by engaging teens and providing nourishing food to individuals living with serious illnesses. Teen chefs, volunteers, and supporters work together so that medically tailored, dietitian-approved meals that meet DASH and diabetes-friendly guidelines are delivered by volunteer “Delivery Angels,” who also provide wellness checks and human connection. Clients are referred by healthcare providers, and the Teen Chef Program outcomes include workforce skills, community connection, confidence, and future readiness. Teen Kitchen Project is the only nonprofit in Santa Cruz County preparing and delivering medically tailored meals for chronic and critical conditions, and the Teen Chef Program powers this work by training local teens in a commercial kitchen while they serve neighbors in need. The organization has plans to triple clients and meals delivered and more than double teen chefs by 2027, and it is running a campaign for a new TKP kitchen with a $100,000 matching gift opportunity. One client shared that Teen Kitchen Project was crucial in keeping them nourished through treatment and recovery, and that visits from the Delivery Angels and the human contact they provided changed their whole day.
