Kids Summer Camp at The Hive, South Pasadena includes hands-on summer art camp sessions where kids do activities such as art journaling, sewing, building fairy houses, Fanciful Frame classes, and Indigo Dye and Shibori. • Ages: 4–12 years old
• Schedule: Little Bees Summer Art Camp runs 9:00 am–12:00 noon and Big Bees Summer Art Camp runs 1:00–4:00 pm, with day-only or week-only options during the weeks of June 15 through August 7; additional 2-hour Art Journaling, Sewing Series, and Teen & ‘Tween Art Journaling classes are offered on specific weekdays and Sundays.
• Price: Little Bees and Big Bees Summer Art Camp cost $75 per day or $350 per week; Art Journaling is $40 per person per class; the Sewing Series is $350 for a month-long series including materials; Teen & ‘Tween Art Journaling is $30 per person per class; parties and events start at $40 per person per event.
Little Bees Summer Art Camp is taught by two early education, CPR, and First Aid certified young teachers, and Big Bees Summer Art Camp is taught by an early education, CPR, and First Aid certified young teacher. Arts and crafts classes are led in small groups with two teachers who are both qualified in early education. The leadership team includes Emily Cline (Owner, Art Journalist, Teacher), Lisa Henderson (Architect, Artist, Teacher), Saida Staudenmaier (Makeup Artist, Artist, Teacher), and Shari Correll (Photographer, Artist, Teacher).
The program follows the mission statement “We believe creativity + community = wellness.” The Hive, South Pasadena supports local female artisans and their makings through retail that features curated secondhand and upcycled items and crafting supplies, and it offers private events and parties with a variety of craft activities, as well as free MeetUp nights called Craft Lab. Lisa Henderson works as a Trustee for a private foundation that focuses on arts education, and Shari Correll volunteers her time and skills in Guatemala.
Parents are asked to alert teachers to allergens, and students may bring snacks if they want. Younger campers must be potty trained, and campers with phones will be asked to put them away. For parties and events, outside refreshments are welcome.
