About
Camp Adventurewood is an outdoor-adventure themed summer day-camp where campers take part in activities such as archery, canoeing, horse-drawn wagon rides, panning for gold, capture the flag, wild animal encounters, water-balloon battles, sports, hiking, and treasure hunt excavations. The program includes a month-long treasure hunt extravaganza as part of its activities.
• Ages: 4–13 years old
• Schedule: Six-week 2026 session from June 15 to July 24, with enrollment options for Daily, M/W/F, or Tu/Th attendance
Established in 1947, Camp Adventurewood limits the number of admitted campers and places campers into age-based groups of about a dozen children with two counselors per group, resulting in a 6:1 camper-to-counselor ratio that is described as one of the very best in Los Angeles County. Campers who have friends or neighbors the same age who are also enrolled are placed in the same group. The camp is comprised of 100% outdoor “open air” activities and offers a month-long treasure hunt extravaganza with treasure hunt excavations throughout the scenic Arroyo Seco.
Senior counselors are hired on the basis of ideals, college records, maturity, knowledge, driving records, and overall experience working with children, while junior counselors are hired on the basis of leadership, character, attentiveness, and dependability. Each van driver must go through extensive training and earn a certified Class C Commercial Driver’s License from the DMV. Employee background-checks and CPR certification are managed, and there is comprehensive food allergy management and a strong commitment to the utmost safety standards in every aspect of the camp.
Camp Adventurewood vans are brand-new, seat-belt-equipped, and allow child booster seats for campers under the age of eight. The vans make door-to-door pick-ups in Alhambra, Altadena, Arcadia, Atwater Village, Eagle Rock, Echo Park, Glendale, Highland Park, La Cañada, La Crescenta, Monrovia, Montrose, Mount Washington, Pasadena, San Gabriel, San Marino, Sierra Madre, Silver Lake, South Pasadena, and Temple City, and families in neighboring cities may arrange alternate pick-up and drop-off locations such as the Bellevue Recreation Center in Silver Lake or Recreation Park in Monrovia. Parents who bring children directly have a lengthened drop-off and pick-up window, with extended care available from 8:00 AM through 5:00 PM.
The camp’s mission states that it is an outdoor-adventure themed summer day-camp in Pasadena for children ages 4–13 that creates a community that nurtures fun, individual and team-based growth, and imagination and creativity, in a positive and diverse environment, and that it allows children to experience the rural outdoors in an inclusive, adventure-inspired environment, without a prolonged absence from home. Camp Adventurewood maintains full compliance with the L.A. County Children’s Camp Safety Ordinance.
Michael Cummings is the Owner and Executive Director. He joined Camp Adventurewood as a camper in the summer of 2003, became a Junior Counselor in 2013, a Senior Counselor in 2017, a Camp Manager in 2019, and was promoted to Executive Director in August 2021. He assumed ownership after the conclusion of the 2023 Summer Session, becoming the sixth owner in the camp’s 79-year history. He personally supervises the California DMV Commercial Driver License training for all Senior Counselors, manages behind-the-scenes aspects including employee background-checks and CPR certification, archery, canoeing, and slingshot safety protocols, and maintaining full compliance with the L.A. County Children’s Camp Safety Ordinance, and oversees daily operations such as pre-scheduling each troop’s daily activities, managing extended care, and selecting camper-friendly Clydesdales for the horse-drawn wagon rides.
Unless specified otherwise, campers bring their own lunches, and the camp provides chilled water during lunchtime and throughout the day. Campers wear official Camp Adventurewood shirts, shorts, and tennis shoes, and bring a backpack containing a towel and water bottle. Official Camp Adventurewood wristbands are provided to each child by their counselors each morning.
