About
St Helena Choral Society Youth Choirs offers choir programs that include concerts, competitions, and special events such as the annual “A Cappella Workshop.” Youth singers take part in activities like annual Messiah performances, singing Handel’s Messiah, and performing in groups such as the St Helena Children’s Chorus, St Helena Teen Choir, and the Jazz@7 Vocal Ensemble. The children’s choir has sung the National Anthem to open San Francisco Giants games, and Jazz@7 performs vocal jazz harmonies in three to five concerts each year along with smaller shows at local wineries.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Price: Tuition varies per semester for St Helena Children's Chorus and scholarships are available.
The St Helena Children’s Chorus presents two to three concerts a year, and the St Helena Teen Choir performs twice a year. The Annual A Cappella Festival Workshop & Performance is a two-day singing workshop that culminates in a performance and has involved the House Jacks and the St Helena High School Choir. Jazz@7 is a small, invitation-only vocal jazz ensemble.
The St Helena Choral Society was formed as a nonprofit in 2007, with performance history going back to 1979, and the Teen Choir was formed in 2008. Craig Bond, the artistic director and choral director, has lived and taught in St. Helena since 1973, and Melissa Bond is co-director of the youth choirs, including the St Helena Children's Chorus and St Helena Teen Choir. The Society describes its mission as teaching, performing, and celebrating music for all ages through choir programs, concerts, competitions, and special events like the annual “A Cappella Workshop,” and it notes that its choral programs are award-winning.
The organization has been involved in community fundraising efforts to bring a performing arts classroom and theater to St Helena, including a community drive and bond approval that helped build a performing arts center. It contributes to artistic and cultural education in the St Helena, Napa Valley community, has partnered for several years with the House Jacks and the St Helena High School Choir for a two-day singing workshop, performs smaller shows at local wineries, and opens San Francisco Giants games by singing the National Anthem. Some students graduate with ten years of participation in Mr. Bond’s choirs.
