About
St Helena Choral Society Youth Choirs offers choir programs that include concerts, competitions, and special events such as the annual “A Cappella Workshop.” Youth singers take part in activities like performances of Handel's Messiah, annual Messiah performances with a chamber orchestra and professional soloists, and the two-day Annual A Cappella Festival Workshop & Performance that culminates in a concert. The program includes groups such as the St Helena Children's Chorus, St Helena Teen Choir, and the Jazz@7 Vocal Ensemble, which perform multiple times each year.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Price: Only half of St. Helena Choral Society’s annual budget is funded by student tuition and performance ticket sales; tuition for St Helena Children's Chorus varies per semester and scholarships are available
The St Helena Children's Chorus presents two to three concerts a year, enters competitions, and sometimes takes part in special events such as singing the National Anthem to open San Francisco Giants games. The St Helena Teen Choir, formed in 2008, performs twice a year. The Jazz@7 Vocal Ensemble is a small, invitation-only vocal jazz group that gives three to five concerts each year and also performs smaller shows at local wineries.
The St Helena Choral Society was formed as a nonprofit in 2007, with a performance history that goes back to 1979. Its mission is to teach, perform, and celebrate music for all ages through choir programs, concerts, competitions, and special events like the annual “A Cappella Workshop,” serving people of all ages in the St Helena, Napa Valley community. The organization participated in community fundraising efforts to create a performing arts classroom and theater, and the St Helena Chamber Singers inaugurated the St Helena Performing Arts Center by singing Handel's Messiah in full after performing in Carnegie Hall.
Craig Bond serves as Artistic Director and choral director of St Helena Choral Society, directs the St Helena Chamber Singers and Jazz@7 Vocal Ensemble, and co-directs both youth choirs with his daughter, Melissa Bond. He is a career choral music director who has lived and taught in St. Helena since 1973, officially retiring from the school district in 2012, and he built award-winning, world-traveling choirs in the St Helena Unified School District. The choral programs are described as award-winning, and some students graduate with ten years of participation in Mr. Bond's choirs.
